Today I was very angry and anguished while travelling in the Chennai city bus..

It was 5.45 PM and I get into a moderately crowded bus number 54 making trip from Broadway to Poonamallee. I saw an unattended bag laying middle of the bus and asked a man who knew local language to check nearby whom this bag pertain to. He asked all people surrounding (around 30 people) and nobody took responsibility of it. I was disturbed a bit and I started doubting on it. I further told him to inform bus conductor about this bag and I was stunned by hearing conductor’s replay. He told that “Let this bag be there, and I will check once trip is over”. I just got tempered by his insensitive and irresponsible comment. I get up and shouted “What if we are not alive till this trip is over” however there was no reaction from him for my anger and he just laughed. I was so annoyed on the people around as they do not even uttered a word in response to conductor’s behaviour. I just stick on to my seat and checked the bag by opening it and was able to make myself ascertain that there is nothing in the bag which may cause damage at public place. Finally after 45 min of travel one man (seemed like Behari) came from front portion of the bus and picked up the unattended bag. Still I was full of anger and thought to catch hold of and through this man out of the bus however somehow I was able to control my anger. But this incident completely shook me from inside and left me with lot of questions as I have seen total insensitivity and un-alertness in the people towards such dangerous and risky matter especially at the public places. Why are we so negligence and un-thoughtful about such things. Does it not conductor’s responsibility to take up this matter seriously and check with the passengers in whole bus for owner. Can’t he is able to open the bag and ascertain that it does not contain any risky material. Why should we blame on the intelligence agencies and police when we do not even want to take participate in informing this kind of news to them. Why people are not able to consider the threat of things been taken so casually. Why people can’t raise their noise altogether when one person is taking lead on such matters. I have heard lot of alerts being displayed on railway station and bus stops regarding this for public awareness and all these alerts are being showcased in local languages as well. Don’t we as a citizen should pay attention to it. I hope as far as safety is considered we should be very much alerted every time and it basically start from us, any other man is not responsibility for your safety. I will completely neglect the fact that people are illiterate as sensitivity and alertness cannot be taught in any school or university, there are basically characters of human being and everybody has got these as gift from god. We just need to learn to apply and use these appropriately. Anyways, I am gratified that there was nothing unexpected was located in the bag, but the fact is that human will not be fortunate every time...Hence be sensitive...be alert...be aggressive and support your fortune!!!!
